The Nursing Shortage is Almost a Myth

The entire country is saturated with nurses, actually. The ‘nursing shortage’ is almost a myth. There is a need for nurses who are experienced in specific specialties (to replace those who have retired or burnt out) and there is usually a need for nurses in long term care (nursing homes). However, there is NOT a huge need for nurses in general. Somehow this big thing came about (and is still going around) that claims “Nursing shortage. We need nurses. Nurses are paid great money. You’ll always have a job as a nurse.” Because this has been said again and again, schools are pumping out about 60 RNs each year (per school). Most schools have waitlists. Around here it can take 3 years just to get IN. And then you have hundreds of new graduates every year who are competing for a handful of jobs that will accept new grads.
My suggestions:
* Apply to all the jobs you’re interested in – even the ones that say they require experience. Sometimes they can’t find someone with experience and would rather (or need to) give someone a chance.
* Apply to jobs you may not normally be interested in to gain experience. Apply to places that aren’t even advertising for jobs. You never know if something might open up.
* If you still can’t find a job, consider going back to school. I know it seems counter-productive but it may give you an edge on the competition. Get your BSN if you got your ASN. If you already have your BSN, get your MSN or Masters in Public Health or become a Nurse Practitioner. You could even stay in healthcare and switch careers by going to school for medicine or pharmacy.
* If you really want to be a nurse or you simply don’t want to go back to school, consider relocation. Search online for jobs through different nursing-related websites. If you go to www.indeed.com it may help you significantly. It is a job search engine that pulls together info from all the other job boards (so instead of checking Monster, Careerbuilder and 10 other random job boards, you can check this one instead and it will give you all of the results).
